For patio use, begin Pandanus in a container at least 14–18 inches wide and equally deep to support root development and top growth. Dracaena draco benefits from starting in a 16–20 inch wide container with weight for stability, especially in windy areas. As plants mature, increase container size gradually rather than moving into overly large pots immediately. Heavy ceramic or concrete containers provide added stability for outdoor placement.
Pandanus grows at a moderate rate during active warm months, steadily adding new leaves from the center. It gradually increases in height and trunk thickness. Dracaena draco grows slowly to moderately. Early growth focuses on root and trunk development. Branching typically occurs after the plant matures or flowers, creating its characteristic umbrella form. Both are long-lived plants that improve structurally with age.
Outdoors, both plants thrive in full sun to partial sun. Pandanus performs well on patios, pool decks, and courtyard spaces with warmth and airflow. Dracaena draco is highly tolerant of sun, heat, and wind once established. In regions with cold winters, grow in containers so plants can be moved indoors before temperatures drop below freezing. In warm climates, both can be planted in-ground in well-drained soil.
